Hemant Taneja joined General Catalyst in 2001, the year when the firm launched its Silicon Valley office. Now Hemant is the Managing Director. He invests in founders with authentic missions that have the potential to change entire industries. His investment thesis, known as “economies of unscale,” describes the belief that small, tightly focused companies can leverage web services, datasets, and AI to successfully launch and compete against much larger, more established competitors. His book, Unscaled, explores this thesis in depth and is due out in early 2018.
Hemant’s current investment portfolio ranges across the fields of medicine, finance, and education, including companies such as Stripe, Snapchat, Color Genomics, Gusto, Livongo Health, TuneIn, ClassDojo, Fundbox, Digit, Fractyl, Grammarly, and Gridco Systems.
Alongside his venture work, he has co-founded Advanced Energy Economy, a public policy advocacy group focused on advanced energy solutions and serves on the board of directors of the non-profit education organization Khan Academy. Hemant holds five degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been a lecturer at both MIT and Stanford University.
