Wang Jian, CTO of Alibaba made his first visit to Slush today to talk to the packed Blue Stage about their public cloud offering called Aliyun.
During his presentation Wang Jiang went through many successful examples that certainly got some startups in the audience drooling on the growth speed – and maybe acting as a late wake-up call for some on the size and potential of Chinese mobile markets. His examples were on startups that have managed to set up and scale their businesses to incredible heights in a few days – or even in few seconds – thanks to Alibaba’s offerings.
His first example resonated especially close to the Finnish audience and Supercell fans, PlayCrab was a mobile gaming company by 3 young founders that started to generate huge daily revenues and was recently sold to OurPalm with $285 million few months ago.
Another example was Kunta, first 3D animation that was completely rendered in Cloud to cut the rendering time from 40 monts to 3 months. Overall the movie used 14 million CPU hours, six times as much as James Camero’s Avatar.
These and several other examples strengthened Wang Jiang’s message on how the hugely scalable cloud platform and supporting commercial services from Aliyun can help even the smallest startups to scale to millions of users in few days after the launch and compete with the established players, and for some of them to also contribute to China’s unique app ecosystem as products like“Pandora of China”, “GitHub of China” and “Vine of China”.
Supercell recently announced impressive results for 2015. The company’s three games — Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, and Hay Day — generated $2.3B in revenue, and raked in $924M in total profits. These are outstanding results especially considering that Supercell employs only 180 people. Many are familiar where Supercell stands today, but how many remember […]
