The story of the report goes back to 2015, when Tom Wehmeier, Partner and Head of Research at Atomico, and Riku Mäkelä, CEO of Slush at the time, sat in a sauna in Tokyo during the first local event held in town. They agreed that the picture of European tech was formed by outside commentators and not Europeans themselves. The logical course of action was to take the narrative into our own hands, thus creating the State of European Tech report.
Since then, the ambition has been to add voices to the narrative. To emphasize the evolving story, not just a passing moment in time. Meeting this goal would not be possible without the great initiative, time and resources that Atomico contributes. Their work has been the backbone of the project and their expertise has enabled us to gather the data used in analyses as well as to access experts in the field for their insights, among other things.
As a new addition to this year’s report, we are putting more effort in understanding diversity and inclusion, and how they are supported in Europe. A new section of questions narrows down on issues concerning diversity specifically. As such, this year’s survey is pioneering in mapping out the state of diversity and inclusion in the ecosystem.
A significant part of the data used is gathered from the people that make up the European tech ecosystem, i.e. you, dear readers. We hope that you contribute to creating the most comprehensive insight there is of our ecosystem.
