After the inaugural Slush Singapore event last year, the team realized that majority of the events in Singapore lack a clear sustainability angle. There might be talks about it on stage but off stage, all talk is forgotten. Slush Singapore decided to walk that talk.
Kelvin Lim, Sustainability Lead for Slush Singapore states: “We acknowledge that as a huge event we naturally also use energy, produce carbon footprint and generate waste. But we realized we could do something about that! We want to encourage all events to follow in our footprints and pay greater attention to sustainability.”
How to walk that talk then, you ask. Well, here are some ways we do it here at Slush Singapore.
The team is actively working on the carbon emissions caused by organizing an event – we even decided to offset up to 45 tonnes of carbon to compensate for the emissions. But our efforts do not stop there.
oBike, Singapore’s first homegrown station-less bike-sharing company, has promised the first 1,000 Slush Singapore attendees will enjoy a 7-day free ride coupon on their bikes. The company will also use their technology to make it easier for the attendees to continue to the afterparty on the evening of the event – if you’re up for a fun night on the 19th, just jump on a complimentary ride by oBike and cycle to the afterparty location in mere ten minutes.
With the partnership, Slush Singapore hopes to show its commitment towards running a more sustainable event. “We’re expecting 3,000 attendees – if we can encourage one third of them to cycle more instead of taking a cab or a bus, we’re up for it! Often it’s small steps that matter”, says Lim.
“Every bit of effort helps reduce our carbon footprints which will go a long way in bringing about a more sustainable environment. We hope that this will be the start of a green movement,” says oBike’s General Manager Elgin Ee, who shares Lim’s excitement on the new partnership.
For the attendees with a taste for sustainable coffee, Bettr Barista is the partnering company to get familiar with – they will offer Slush Singapore attendees complimentary coffee throughout the event day. Bettr Barista is Singapore’s first Certified B Corporation and a 2016 and 2017 “Best For The World (Community)” organisation. Part of its commitment to being a socially responsible business includes running a Holistic Training Programme, which arms disadvantaged women and at-risk youth with vocational and life skills that pave the way for long-term careers in the specialty coffee industry.
“Slush is a grounds-up movement empowering young people to believe they can achieve anything. It’s a great match with Bettr Barista’s values,” Lim adds.
And there’s more. This year, we decided to reduce the number of plastic bottles and replace them with more water dispensers. Incon Green is also introducing a reverse vending machine, where all the possible empty bottles carried around can be returned to. In exchange for the empty bottles, the attendees get a lucky draw coupon. The event venue Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre supports Slush Singapore’s sustainability journey by offering attendees and exhibitors easy waste disposal with colored bins for proper recycling and waste management. The Slush team also encourages the exhibitors to refrain from using printed brochures and consider digital leaflets.
Now, you could say that we’re walking the talk, right?
