If you don’t know our friends at The Shortcut, here’s a quick intro! They are a Helsinki-based organisation, also part of the Startup Foundation, promoting diversity within the Finnish startup ecosystem. The Shortcut’s mission is to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to get involved with the scene or build their own company. They too organize all sorts of events, from small gatherings to bigger events such as their School of Startups program happening twice a year.
On Monday, Aug 27, Tomi Kaukinen and Nina Martin started their journey towards Owerri, Nigeria. Their mission is to meet up with our local partner from Heartland Incubation Hub. There are 15 startups waiting to attend Tomi and Nina’s workshops on business development, new technologies, and design. Those 15 preselected startups have been taking part in Heartland Incubation Hub’s local, month-long acceleration program ending with the Slush GIA pitching day. In Owerri, the founders will pitch their startup ideas on Aug 31 and at least one of them will be selected to join the Slush GIA BootCamp, taking place in Helsinki later on this fall.
This very same mobile School of Startups produced and provided in collaboration with The Shortcut, is traveling around the world as well. Tomi’s and Nina’s next destination is Kosovo, Aape Pohjavirta, and Michihito Mizutani will travel to Rwanda, and Moaffak Ahmed will take over our final tour in Southern Africa.
While building up the program, it was a pleasant surprise to come across such enthusiasm to help founders forward. In the future, we’re looking to connect with more coaches and mentors with a passion for what they do, to support our entrepreneurs, host workshops, and share their expertise.
The goal this year is to test out the best practices in organizing the most impactful content for Slush GIA partners globally. When developing the program further, it is crucial to explore all the opportunities. Next year, hopefully, we will have more program going global, more magnificent coaches in our reach, and activities taking place within each and every Slush GIA hub.
