Over the last few months, together with our local hub partners, we’ve selected 17 exceptional startups from Vietnam, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia and South Africa, who will join us in Helsinki next month.
In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, there was a boot camp style selection process organized by the technology hub iceAddis. The boot camp winners and Slush participants are Bebet, an urban waste management system, and Ke-Nefas, decentralized renewable energy generators supplier.
The 17 startups from six countries were selected on the basis of the uniqueness of the business model; fit to the Slush concept as well as positive environmental and societal impact they derive.
For the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, this cooperation is a first of its kind. Aki Enkenberg, the Senior Advisor, Information Society and STI for Development at the Ministry, shares the background to this project:
“Slush Impact is a good example of fresh thinking around the role of business in society. Companies in the developing world play a major role in eradicating poverty, solving development problems and advancing sustainable development. Many countries in Africa and elsewhere are now experiencing a new wave of innovative start-ups emerging, often focused on making a real social impact in addition to profit.“
“We wanted to bring a good number of these to experience Slush and get connected with Finnish and international companies and investors. I’d encourage other Slush guests to fully use the opportunity to meet and learn more about their ideas and markets,” concludes Enkenberg.
