Meeting the talent gap in software engineer recruitment is a global challenge. It is a problem that Christina Sass and the team at Andela are trying to solve. Andela recruits top software engineers and developers from the African continent and connects them with the global tech company network.
Christina Sass is the co-founder and President of Andela, an organization that last fall raised $40M Series C round from investors such as Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Salesforce Ventures, Spark Capital and GV. Andela is ensuring that tech career possibilities are evenly distributed; they provide tech talent from the African continent with opportunities to work with the best startups worldwide. Andela team selects the best talent out of a vast pool of candidates from Africa – 75,000 applicants so far – trains them for months and then matches them with top-notch startups which are most relevant to their expertise and interests.
Andela functions under the belief that talent is global but opportunities tend to be biased: the global tech ecosystem needs interconnectedness to provide companies with the top talent. Andela sources for the best talent in growing markets – focusing on the African continent at the moment – and connects them with the best-fitting startups worldwide. By outsourcing talent to untapped markets, their partners are able to build the highest-performing engineering teams in the world.
Christina has had a long career working with emerging and developing markets. Prior to Andela, she built education and employment programs in China, Gaza and the West Bank, Kenya and in her home state of Georgia. Christina worked as an advisor to the President and CEO of The Mastercard Foundation, a $9B global foundation working to advance youth learning and financial inclusion for African youth. She has also served as Director of the Program Department of the Clinton Global Initiative.
At the Slush stage, Christina will share her story on building successful teams across the ocean. What kinds of talent acquisition strategies does Andela use? How does Andela prepare their tech talent to be part of building a more inclusive future for the global tech industry? And how do they match and connect their coders from a different continent to the existing company culture both at Andela and the partner company?
Don’t miss out on hearing Sass’ story – Early Bird ticket sales to Slush will end on September 26th. Get your Slush pass now!
