Trello is a collaboration tool for project management, designed not for the individual but for the team. “People are using it to solve problems when they are organizing with other people”, Michael crystallizes. The difference-making visualization enables its 19 million users (1/2017) to have a better perspective on their projects than post-its and whiteboards might. As the business communication and collaboration software market is expected to grow from 15$ billion in 2016 to 28$ billion by 2020, it starts to make sense that in last January, Trello was bought with $425 million by the Australian software giant Atlassian.
The decision to sell was in line with Michael’s high ambitions to multiply their user base up to 100 million. According to him, it was the similar purpose which drove the companies together – and Trello a bit closer to their moonshot. As he clarifies, they have always wanted to create a solution to many: a mass market product with a huge demand. That won’t change after the acquisition since Trello will remain mostly “untouched”.
What we have is a unique, simple and successful product in a growing market and an ambitious team developing it. That instantly sounds promising. But when you add Michael’s passion towards listening users, his willingness to aggressively internationalize and his design-driven thinking on top of that, you have the true recipe for success.
