Notion Capital has just closed its first investment from the new fund, in Workable, and according to Chrys Chrysanthou, Principal at Notion Capital, they have a few other deals coming up very soon. The company is primarily a Series A investor looking for to invest approximately $3M at initial investment as part of a company’s round, but they also seed $750-$1M investments in companies that have a product and some early traction. Notion Capital’s market focus consists of three big themes disrupting IT industry: cloud delivered software, mobile penetrating the workplace and leveraging big data. “There are massive opportunities for disruption for example in industries such as insurance, security and compliance”, describes Chrys who will be attending Slush also this year and whom we had the pleasure to interview.
Cloud computing technologies and SaaS business models have been around for a few years, but they are still early in terms of adoption, with the next few years seeing the adoption moving in favour of cloud vs. on-prem deployments. The introduction of mobile in the workplace amplifies the opportunity even further. We always look for opportunities that leverage the key three themes to deliver real, transformational value to the enterprise. We love the scalability, high margins, recurring revenues and high customer retention characteristics of successful SaaS businesses.
We have been massive fans of the Nordics ecosystem and frequently travel across the main hubs in the region for events and to meet companies. Companies from the Nordics have a strong sense of both technological innovation, design and global looking target market. There is a great pool of serial entrepreneurs and seasoned angel investors that contribute to the ecosystem in some of the main cities. There are several markets and sectors where the Nordics have a strong concentration and advantage over the rest of Europe, both in B2C (gaming, music, comms) and B2B (analytics, infrastructure, IoT etc.). We already have several investments (including Tradeshift, Mojn) in the Nordics and looking at my pipeline right now, several of the top companies we are looking at both at Seed and Series A level come from all the main hubs in the Nordics. We look forward to being even more active now with our new fund, keep an eye out for that!
I would urge startups to try contacting me in advance, perhaps through common contacts, rather than trying to grab my attention real-time at Slush. Typically, when attending events like Slush, VCs pre-book a lot of their time to be as productive as possible. So reaching out to me in advance is ideally better. I am always reachable through all social media and via email at cc(at)notioncapital.com as well. If that’s not possible, then a big smile and a great one line introduction of the company that grabs my attention immediately are well recommended.
Chrys tells that the combination of getting to meet interesting companies, engage with peers and industry experts and hear amazing panels and speakers is what makes him come back every year. He is also looking forward to meet startups in some of the relatively newer technology themes, such as drone platforms, machine intelligence and Internet of Things.
