Next Games, a Finnish gaming company created by former designers from Rovio, Supercell and Disney, announced its first game on the Silver Stage of Slush today. CEO Teemu Huuhtanen stepped forward and gave us the first details of Compass Point: West.
The game is set in the Wild West, where colourful graphics, a range of interesting characters and a rich storyline engage the player into shootouts against an oil baron and his henchmen. The player gets to take care of his/her own town and defend outposts with the town Sheriff and a group of heroes acquired by collecting cards throughout the game. “We have invested heavily on character development and story,” says Huuhtanen.
According to CPO Joakim Achrén, Compass Point: West is based on a card mechanic rarely seen in action strategy games. This gives the game a fresh twist that separates it from others of its kind. The game is the first in a series of four episodes, and will be launched in February 2015.
The launch marks an important milestone for Next Games and its 45 person team. The company was founded in May 2013 by a group of experienced game designers, who want to create exciting entertainment and visually astonishing games. The Helsinki-based firm raised $8M in funding on their Pan-Pacific investment round from sources such as Lionsgate, IDG Ventures, Lowercase Capital, IDG Capital and AMC Networks.
The future of the company looks interesting, since they are also working on a mobile game based on the AMC TV show The Walking Dead. The series is one of the most watched TV shows in cable history, as the premiere of season five reached 22.4 million viewers. It seems safe to say that there is a lot to be expected from Next Games.
