The online marketing landscape of today has more opportunities than ever. Navigating in the constantly evolving marketing-tech ecosystem can be a bit of a struggle, which is why we are excited to announce our first conversation primarily focusing on the art of performance marketing. Welcome to Slush Eva Leach, Christian Meermann, and Gessica Bicego!
Why performance marketing? Early stage startups don’t often enjoy a high level of brand recognition, nor do they have big marketing budgets to spend on brand building for long term results. It just doesn’t make sense for them yet. Startups are fighting over the best performance marketers, as they need to connect with their audience fast. In performance marketing, advertisers usually pay when a specific action is successfully completed, such as a sale, a lead, or a click. Only paying for completed actions is a cost-efficient and low-risk way for marketers to drive traffic or conversions.
Before spending on every marketing whim and fantasy, startups need to make sure they are in a fit state for a stream of leads and new customers. It can be a challenge to decide when to start advertising, not to mention how to begin with. We have gathered a highly experienced performance marketing team to share their best tricks and discuss what founders need to know to get started with performance marketing.

Christian Meermann – Founding Partner, Cherry Ventures
Christian Meermann joined Zalando as their first CMO and he was responsible for setting up all of their marketing efforts, including performance marketing from 0 to €250M. Christian has first-hand experience in building a startup’s performance marketing team and also, what are the steps to starting a venture capital fund in Berlin.
Gessica Bicego – Director of Performance Marketing, Blinkist
Gessica Bicego currently leads the performance marketing team at Blinkist, a mobile learning startup that inspires people to keep on learning by offering easy-to-digest key insights from non-fiction books.
