“Of course there is similar free data, for example Google Earth. However, the images are quite old and of a lower quality”, Kokorich described.
Kokorich’s resume is no doubt impressive. After completing studies at Novosibirsk University along with Stanford and Georgetown University, in 1997 he founded Dauria, a company specializing in water treatment chemicals and processing of timber. In 2011 he started investing in aerospace projects and later in 2012 founded Dauria Aerospace.
Dauria Geo is his latest venture in the world of satellite cloud platforms. ”With the inheritance of Soviet space technology, it is odd that we are only the first private company to build satellites in Russia”, Kokorich said.
Whether it is the development of the Amazon rainforest’s throughout the years or storm damages of the week, Dauria Geo serves it to viewer with high quality satellite images. According to Kokorich, Dauria Geo’s mission is to deliver imagery and data analytics daily.
The problem up to this point has been that accessing satellite data and imagery is made very difficult for smaller companies. The data and images may be of great benefit to the society, but are held mostly by governments and large corporations. Kokorich told at Slush that Dauria Geo is all about sharing open knowledge. They have partnership agreements with companies in the Middle East, China, Europe as well as the US.
Dauria Geo is also constantly working towards making the data from NASA operated satellites such as Landsat and MODIS accessible. In addition, they plan to send eight satellites to orbit next year.
Kokorich also announced at Slush that in the next few years Dauria Geo aims to send more than twenty satellites to space to provide information about the ground features of Earth. The future of satellite cloud platforms is looking bright – Dauria Geo is not only looking for partnerships but also companies to invest in to further broaden the field of business.
”Why am I so engaged in this business? Just look at the images. The Earth is the most beautiful thing.”
