Sudden Coffee was founded by Kalle Freese and Joshua Zloof in 2015. Freese is a two-time Finnish Barista Champion and holds the 9th place in World Barista Championships. In 2014, Freese was also in charge of serving close to 22,000 cups of coffee for Slush visitors in Helsinki. Zloof has formerly worked for McKinsey as well as Breadcrump by Groupon.
Over the recent months, the company has been fine-tuning its artisanal coffee with beta customers. Sudden Coffee’s instant coffee is brewed one cup at a time, using only single-origin beans from top roasters, and then dehydrated into powder that retains complex notes in the flavor. Their aim? Make instant coffee taste really, really good.
The instant coffee market is expected to be worth more than $35 billion in 2018. Sudden Coffee’s seed round of a $2.7 million is helping the company take their operations into the next level. The round was led by Charles River Ventures (CRV) and further backed by Founder Collective, Lifeline Ventures and a group of angel investors. Also Caterina Fake, Founder of Flickr and Hunch and a #slush15 speaker, is among the early investors.
“We’re thrilled to be working with a group of people who truly understand and believe in our vision for the ‘no-brew’ coffee experience of the future,” Freese and Zloof said in a press release.
“We believe that a great cup of coffee can make your day so much better, yet many people simply don’t have access to great cafes in their town or know how to select and brew coffee at home. Now even Kalle’s grandmother – living in a forest in Finland – can have that experience”, Sudden Coffee states.
