Slush is back again in Singapore this year and the spotlights are once again on the Pitch Competition and the qualifying startups. We spoke with AEvice Health, the winner of Slush Singapore’s first ever Pitch Competition and here are some insights from their experience.
(Pssst. and some tips on how to win)
Incepted in July 2016, AEvice Health aims to aid parents and patients to better control asthma attacks through BioAsthma, a proprietary wearable device that monitors respiratory signals continuously, and therefore providing valuable insights on a patient’s condition.
AEvice Health entered last year’s Pitch Competition with the intentions of gaining exposure to Venture Capitalists and their feedback. They clearly walked away with a lot more.
“I’m glad that we did what we did as Slush Singapore brought us a long way after that and opened many doors for us.” As mentioned by Adrian, co-founder of AEvice Health.
The competition was a fantastic platform for them to hone their pitches. Besides the multiple rounds of pitching and feedback, startups like AEvice Health had the opportunity to work closely with several mentors prior to the judging rounds.
As part of the Slush Singapore Top Startup Prize, the team received the opportunity to compete onstage at the Slush Helsinki Top100. Despite the tough competition, AEvice Health made it into the finals.
“At that point in time, we were looking for a team. Concurrently, we were part of CNA’s Startup Season 4, which was something that Slush Singapore managed to get us into. With the combination of Slush Singapore and our opportunity to be on CNA’s programme, it has allowed us to get the commercial tractions and interested investors. We knew that we were on the right page.” As mentioned by Edmund, co-founder of AEvice Health.
The tremendous exposure helped the team build credibility and subsequently stronger working relationships with medical institutions in Singapore.
“This is critical as we need validation like that to improve on our product design and product value proposition.”
The opportunity to pitch on Slush Helsinki’s stage brought them all the way to Dubai. They were selected to be a part of an accelerator programme in Dubai to work further on their idea.
“The insights that we have taken away from Slush as a whole will be 2 things – Clarity in our product development of what we want to do and most importantly to grow in our character. Being more confident, outspoken and to dare to ask. If we did not join, we would not have the opportunity to discover all these and to go to Slush Helsinki to pitch as well.”
