There is a large gender disparity in the field of STEM, which stands for the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For example, in the U.S women make up half of the total college-educated workforce, but only 29% of the science and engineering workforce.
This gap develops early on in the fields of STEM education where females are currently underrepresented. A study by Microsoft indicates that girls become interested in STEM around the age of 11 but this interest starts to wane by the age of 15. The following factors were identified in the study as key factors to support girls’ participation in STEM fields:
Slush wants to play a role in addressing the gender imbalance in the field of STEM. As a first step, Slush is joining forces with HeForShe to raise money for HeForShe IMPACT Scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding female students admitted to undergraduate STEM degree programs. The effort we put into supporting women in STEM today will directly impact the number of female role models in the future. Donations can be done online as well as signing up to the pledge at the PwC stand at Slush.
PwC is one of ten global HeForShe IMPACT10x10x10 Champions representing the corporate sector. IMPACT 10x10x10 engages 10 Heads of State, 10 global CEOs and 10 University Presidents to accelerate progress towards gender equality. Each IMPACT Champion has made gender equality an institutional priority, committing to bold targets. Not only has PwC been an avid supporter of the movement, but it has also achieved significant progress. In less than a year, PwC increased the number of women on their global leadership team from 18% to 47%. As a global partner of Slush, it is only natural for PwC to support the HeForShe movement at Slush too. We invite all Slush participants to make the HeForShe commitment at the PwC booth at Slush or before the event here.
