Finnish startup Oura took the Founder Stage on Thursday by revealing their latest product. Their new wearable tech is a ring, which monitors its wearer’s sleep cycle. Further, this ring is a comprehensive body monitor that offers the tools for realising your potential as an athlete.
Oura was founded 5 years ago, when CEO Petteri Lahtela got together with his cousin, CTO Kari Kivelä to start a new kind of health company. “We had been thinking of doing a project together for a long time, but the opportunity didn’t arise until then,” Petteri says. The company’s philosophy lies in ensuring good sleep. “Bad sleep is a big problem today. We want to give people the tools to overcome this,” Petteri says.
Oura’s new ring is half the size of the first one and has 10 times the processing power. It also lasts one week on a single charge. The first ring was known solely as a sleep cycle monitor, but the new version does so much more. It can be used as an activity tracker, heart rate monitor and a thermometer. The ring is also the company’s unique tribute to Finland’s 100th Independence Day.
“This ring combines Finnish technology, science and design. Where better to release it than Slush and what better time than now?” Kari says. But really Oura, why a ring out of all the wearables? “Our research shows that the finger is the best place to measure all the body’s activities,” Kari goes on. “The benefit of this is that it is a sleep tracker you can use comfortably!”
